Tharuni's Campaign
Reaching out to Tribals

Tharuni noticed that the prevalence of susceptibility to spreading of AIDS is more in tribal hamlets due to lack of awareness.  Campaign if carried out in Telugu or English or Hindi will not be effective. Hence a specially designed course in local Tribal language (Lambada) was developed and a massive campaign in over 400 remote tribal hamlets launched. This proved to be very effective in reaching out to a large number of illiterate tribals.

Informal interactions are always useful in communicating sensitive messages

Tharuni always believed that effective communication is possible only through informal person to person interactions.

After the interactive sessions by Tharuni, there is an increased awareness on condom usage

As a follow up measure after the training / interactive sessions condoms were distributed to encourage safe sex.

Women to the forefront

The ABC of AIDS campaign was quite successfull as could be seen from the enthusiasm of the women

After the ice-breaking sessions with resource persons, the women had no inhibitions about discussing these sensitive issues and were seen convinced about the need to use a condom to protect themselves and their children.
