FACT FILE :
 
Tharuni in the past 4 years has got the following achievements to its credit
 
  1. Imparted Family Life Education to about 2000 adolescent girls studying in various Government high schools in Warangal district.
  2. Launched a successful campaign against sale of gutkha near educational institutions which resulted in the District Collectors of Warangal and Karimnagar issuing prohibitory orders on sale of gutka for the first time in the state.  Later on the State Government imposed a state wide ban on sale of gutka.
  3. Taken up a massive campaign against the social evil of Child Marriages in 100 villages in 24 Mandals of Warangal district. This created a good impact and increased public conscience resulting in prevention of many child marriages as well as nipping the potential ones in the bud.
  4. Organised a number of Health Camps for the adolescent girls, women and the aged in Warangal district.  This has resulted in introduction of much needed intervention by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to adolescent girls for preventing anaemia in a big way.
  5. The gyaenic and cancer detection camps for rural poor women had helped in highlighting the prevalence of hysterectomies and the problems of marrying at an early age
  6. Organised Vocational Training to 250 adolescent girls in collaboration with the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Warangal so as to improve their income earning capacity and consequently delay the age of marriage.
  7. Set up an Employment Generation Training Centre for adolescent girls at Kazipet in collaboration with Lions Club of Warangal and DRDA Warangal.
  8. Launched a sustained campaign against AIDS in Warangal district covering 81 villages in 22 Mandals during April 2002 which had a good impact in the interior villages.

 

  1. Established Forum for the Aged in seven villages of Warangal district involving 1500 aged people (above 60 years of age) with focus on improving their self status as well as economic status through small income generating activities. This forum also helps in the aged contributing actively to the society through village development works like tree planting, counseling to youngsters, etc. Tharuni was identified by the Government of Andhra Pradesh as a nodal agency for selecting beneficiaries for sanctioning the Old Age Pension in these villages.

 

  1. Organised annual Kishora Balika Melas (for adolescent girls) and Vruddula Mela (for the aged) which provided a platform to these groups to air their views display their talents and get enlightened.

 

  1. Organised AIDS prevention education program for adolescent girls and young women in 28 villages of 3 Mandals of Warangal district.

 12.  Successfully implemented a pilot project on AIDS awareness for self

      help group members, youth and drop out adolescent girls in

      210  villages of 7 Mandals of Warangal district covering 90,000

      beneficiaries, which was highly appreciated by members of UNICEF,

      World Bank, NACO, UNAIDS, APARD and APSACS.

 

13.  Adopted a village Katrapally and set up sub-committees for   

      various village development works. Facilitated the raising of

     medicinal  plantations by the farmers in collaboration with the State

     Medicinal Plant Board and Bankers.

 

14. Many long pending problems in Katrapally village could be quickly

     resolved after adoption of the village by Tharuni.  These include

     provison of drinking water, water for irrigation, street lights, etc apart

    from execution of a major project of Individual Sanitary Latrine

    construction through voluntary contributions.  This prompted the

    district administration to sanction more units to Katrapally village apart

    from recommending the unique venture for national recognition.
